A copied Steam recipient profile: verify the offer’s account

A recipient can look familiar while belonging to another account.

What happened

A recipient can look familiar while belonging to another account. Nicknames and avatars are visible presentation rather than a unique assurance of identity. Start from the actual offer and confirmation, not a screenshot supplied in chat. The account linked by the transfer is the one that matters, even if a message nearby claims to represent a known trading bot or support team.

What to check

Open the recipient from the offer itself and compare its account context with the destination you intentionally chose. Read the item list and transfer direction as well. If the account differs, leave the offer unapproved and resolve the discrepancy through the service request you already have. Do not let a stranger supply a replacement explanation that asks you to approve first and investigate afterward.

Worked example

For example, a fresh profile copies a bot’s avatar and name. A chat screenshot resembles the expected recipient, but the offer links to a different account. Inspecting the linked account exposes the difference before approval. An attractive profile, old-looking biography, or claimed staff title cannot make the screenshot a substitute for the actual transfer record you are considering.

Result and next step

A satisfactory check identifies the real offer recipient and matching items, rather than merely recognizing a name. Preserve the offer reference and the account references required to explain a mismatch. Report impersonation through appropriate official tools. Consult Steam trading practices and trade redirection guidance. Profile age and level can provide context but should never be described as a guarantee that a transfer is trustworthy.
