Define the specific decision
Define the foundation through contrast and saturation rather than requiring every item to share an identical colour.
For candidates relevant to “Choose a neutral foundation for an inventory”, use the skin finder. Keep this task separate from your broader inventory plan.
Read the worked example
Three example entries use grey, dark blue and muted green; restrained saturation connects them rather than an exact shade match.
A neutral foundation does not mean an entirely grey set. In the example, dark blue and muted green work together because their contrast has similar strength. Test this with equally sized small cards and check whether one dominates. A pattern with tiny bright details may remain restrained in the overall board, while one large white area can change the balance more strongly. Record the accepted features: moderate saturation, limited contrast and no second centre of attention. These observations concern your board, not rarity categories. Before finishing, temporarily add a future accent card and check that the hierarchy stays clear. Remove it from the final list when it is only a test.
| Entry | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Grey | restrained main areas |
| Dark blue | limited colour contrast |
| Muted green | support without a second accent |
Use this task checklist
- Choose an acceptable contrast level.
- Compare candidates against the same background.
- Leave room for a future accent.
Recognise the failure condition
Calling every dark item neutral without checking its pattern and contrast.
The foundation uses concrete visual criteria and can accommodate one later accent.
Apply the additional check
Neutrality is relative to the set, not an isolated image. The same muted green may be restrained among high-contrast entries and prominent among entirely dark ones. Save the complete board alongside individual cards. If a future accent has not been selected, do not fit the foundation to an unknown specific item; leave visual room for it. A neutral set can be complete on its own. A temporary test card does not need to become a new wish, and test images should remain separate from included items.
